She hadn’t meant to come here.
She had been digging for her father’s notes on the town, hoping that would make running this place a little easier if she knew the little details. Not that she wanted to see the notes at the same time because that meant she’d know how her father thought and that was honestly something she didn’t need to know. His mind had been a sick and twisted place if you asked Sera, and she was one of five other people that would know that fact very well because they had been his daughters…and his wife. Sera didn’t remember much of her mother but she knew enough. Remembered following at the woman’s footsteps, close at hand. The warm touch and the comforting words. The presence of her. It was thoughts of her mother and her mother alone that helped the temperamental young woman deal with her abilities and the way they tore at her.
She hadn’t meant to come here at all. Too many memories. And all of them painful. But if there was anywhere her father would have kept his notes it would have been here. She had gone past the mostly unused door, unsurprised to see footsteps here or there in the dust. Vira had probably been here. She didn’t understand, but she wasn’t surprised. She doubted she would ever understand her older sister, but she didn’t try to. She just took Vira as she was and left it at that. There was nothing else to do when it came to her very purple older sister. She didn’t even remember Vira before she was purple, and she wondered if her sister remembered either. Probably not.
Vira didn’t even remember that Sera had told her she was leaving, Sera thought with a smile at that. Constantly accusing her. Sera simply assumed it had been an off day and had left it at that. In truth, it was Vira who had brought her back here, Vira was the only one who would have been able to pull her back. Her big sister, sounded so confused like a little girl…Sera had to come back. Had to be there for her sister. What type of sister would she be if she hadn’t come back?
She shook her head. She was looking for the papers now. She had gone further into the lab, and wishing she wouldn’t have to. Shadow, her familiar, had never been in here because Sera had never allowed herself be dragged back here after her year long stay in her room where she had called Shadow to her, needing a companion. Needing comfort. And that was Shadow for her. Her gaze fell to the cat who was delicately sniffing a pile of Sera didn’t even want to know what, as the witch went further into the rooms, her gaze falling on nothing in particular.
Until she got to one room in particular.
She froze, and then slowly walked over there, her hand brushing against the table…
She tugged against the grip on her arm. She didn’t like being in here! She didn’t want to be in here! The tugging managed to loosen the tie from her hair, loosing the brown hair that was kept much longer than when Sera was only 13 than it was now. Now it was kept short and more serious, aloof. But then, she had just been a girl. A little girl. A little girl who had only managed to develop a skill for one of the four main elements.
Her father wasn’t pleased with this of course.
”Daddy let me go! she had cried, digging her heels in, not that it did her any good against her father. He didn’t even act like he heard her. And from the way his eyes gleamed she figured he was too deep in his private happiness that he was going to experiment again. And for the first time on little Sera who had usually evaded this because he had been waiting to see which abilities she would develop. He hadn’t been happy at all when it had only been one. She was the daughter of two highly gifted witches after all, he had chosen her mother for that very reason and she had disappointed him.
Good things never happened when you disappointed Daddy.
Her eyes searched the room frantically as her sneakers tried to find purchase in the tiles and failed. Where was Vir? She was usually here, she usually was the reason Sera got out when this happened! Not that she actively got Sera out but just by being there! Not that Sera wanted Vira to get hurt, but she just…she just didn’t want to be here! She also didn’t want it to be her little sisters, no. That wasn’t allowed either. The twins needed to stay away from Daddy when he was like this.
He picked her up by the waist, still holding her away from himself, impersonal as always, as he lifted her on to the table. ”Calm down, Sera. I’m just going to make you better. Those words scared Sera. That was what Daddy always said about just about anything when it came to experiments. Like the time he had tried to make the puppy the twins brought home better and it had turned green and died a week later. She didn’t want to turn green and die a week later too.
Sera wasn’t good enough with her powers to use them to get away, and even if she was Earth was no use in here she was trapped. Her hand dug into the locket around her neck, her mother’s, so hard that it left an imprint of the engraving s on it on her hand. She didn’t notice, she gripped it harder and tried to scramble off the table when she saw the size of the needle coming her way. No, no no that was not going in her arm! Or anywhere else! She tried to scramble away but he still had her arm. She screamed as he pierced the skin with it, going to see her genes she knew now. Going to twist them over the next two years she knew now. She didn’t understand then. Then she had just wanted out…
Sera came back to the present with her hands digging into the table in front of her hard enough to bruise her hands again, the locket, the same locket, falling from the deep dark green silk blouse she wore to hang in front of her. It calmed her enough to stop the mini whirlpool of water she had created around herself as she had gotten upset. She hadn’t been paying attention it seemed. Damn. Either there was a leak around here or she had summoned the water herself. As she calmed, forced herself to calm, her control over water vanished and the water splashed to the floor, almost hitting Shadow but he jumped out of the way in time.
He was dead. He was long dead. She had to remember that. And ignore the phantoms in this room.
She heard a noise behind her, a loud one, and turned, tired and ran her fingers through her chestnut hair. Though a faint smile found its way to her lips when she saw who it was. ”Hey big sis” she teased lightly at the very purple presence in the room. Weird, she hadn’t been alone with her sister in the longest time. They always met in a group, the four of them, and then went back to their respective corners. It didn’t bother her to see Vira. Not in the slightest. Sera loved all her sisters even if they drove her insane.
