There was something about nature that calmed the usually skittish Irish girl down and allowed her to stop and think. She was Pagan on top of being a witch so of course that factored in, but it was something that was just natural in her. Her mother had taught her to respect the earth, and she knew that even if she hadn’t been born with a “gift” she would have been respectful of nature. Her mother had been taught by her mother and so on. And Serenity had always been raised on food from their garden, all natural and amazing. It was perfect for the girl and made her ache for her very green and wild hometown, rather than being here in this fucked up town or in Fells Church where it wasn’t always as easy to find a speck of green to go around in. There were places, of course, but lately she had been feeling a little too nervous to go out.
It was always good to stay out of the way of people who could, and usually would if given a reason, kill her. Didn’t help that certain creatures that went bump in the night scared the life out of her to the point that she’d hide and quiver. Pathetic and it made her yell at herself. But being with Colin, it had made her a bit more brave, a bit more ready to step out of her shell a little. He made her feel better, like she wasn’t some pathetic chicken, like she was somebody. And now that she had him back again, finally back again, she was starting to feel this way again. Like she could be the girl she used to be again if she just stopped being afraid and really tried again. So she had bit the bullet and left her house.
Sliding her feet into new converse and silently thanking said boyfriend for them even if he wouldn’t admit to giving them to her, she also pulled on her third layer, her coat, and left her comfort zone, leaving the shopping complex as well and the Cauldron district where it was mostly other witches. Who didn't want to hurt her. Lately she had just stayed in here and gone to school. That was all. The supernatural community seemed to be in an uproar these days and she wasn’t willing to get caught in the middle of that, thank you. She preferred to live and not…end up like her mother. She closed her eyes against that pain.
It was a nice day, for spring that is, and there wasn’t much frost on the ground anymore, it had mostly melted off. So it was fine to go for a walk, and it wasn’t too cold out. It was the perfect day, so she would do her best not to drag up old memories and simply enjoy a nice time outside rather than being shut up indoors. There was still a little mud here or there, but she easily avoided it. She knew where she was headed...she hoped anyway. Back when she was in Fell's Church, she usually headed to the same place every time she decided she needed to get out and enjoy her time outdoors. The Old Woods. There was a spring in there, a cute little babbling brook, that she absolutely adored and it seemed to like her right back if the way that it always listened to her was any indication of that fact. But since being here, she had found something that felt like a near cousin to that brook.
She had made it there easily enough, that was always the easy part. She could weave through town with her hood up and her head down easily. No one noticed her, no one stopped her on the streets to talk to her, and she liked that part of being herself a lot. It meant she didn’t have to deal with people, didn’t have to chance them touching her and setting off her Sight. She couldn’t and wouldn’t let that happen, not anymore. She was being more careful with the damn thing. She hated to think that it would get out of control, it was an annoying thing after all. She would rather ignore that aspect of her gifts rather than learn how to work it.
Chicken move? Maybe. She didn’t care though.
She shook her head and got back to her easy walk, more like a hike, through the old woods. She loved feeling her muscles move, she had let herself get too weak over these past few months. She used to be constantly on the move, never time to sit still for as long as she had these past few months. It had kept her strong, kept her active. She needed to remember to go on more hikes and keep up her slight muscle or she’d be totally vulnerable which wasn’t something she wanted to deal with, the prospect scared her. Sadly, most things scared Serrie.
Which would be evident in a moment.
She had finally made it to her new favorite little spring. Her favorite spot in this whole town was right here now because it was far away, she’d sacrifice everything for this spot where she felt like she could actually control her gift. Here the water spoke to her. It listened. She had made friends with this little body of water, and it felt so nice.
But she’d be snapped out of her reverie. A small noise, like a footstep or someone stepping on a twig, caused her to whirl around. She was caught between the need to freeze and hope the other person left her alone and moved along. Or she could call out and pretend to be tough. For all she knew it was just a squirrel or something after all.
In the end she chose the first option, and hoped the other person would move along.
